The Whimsical Sweet: Take Two!

The Whimsical Sweet: Take Two!

Today is the big day!

You may notice some big changes around here. With the extraordinary help of Emily Carpenter at WhizBang! Web Solutions, we have ourselves a brand spankin’ new look!

What’s to come? What should we expect?

Do-It-Yourself everythings. Motivational thoughts. Delish recipes. Handmade shop love. Homeschool journaling. Kids, kids, and more kids. Parenting tricks. Partnership tricks. Small business advice. Top Five Favorites such as web sites for kids, couponing sites, clothing stores, iPad apps, even Christmas songs…the list continues. We will have a plethora of features, reviews, & spectacular giveaways from beautiful small businesses and lovely handmade shops.

I’ve been writing here for almost three and a half years. I’ve written over two hundred posts about dozens of different topics including various people, stories from my life, sharing projects, recipes and photos from the world as I know it. Through my eyes. (You can read a little About Me if you’d like.)

There have been many favorites. The thoughts that evolve into dreams that turn into words on a computer screen. I feel so vulnerable in the moments before hitting ‘publish’. You will know more. More about me. More about my life. More about who I am inside.

Some of my favorite posts have already been written. I can recall being Stuck In A Hug as if it were yesterday. There were those moments worth sharing, like The Birth Story Of Marsden Peter & The Birth Story Of Tavia KateI gave you some insight to our homeschooling journey with the series This Is Homeschool. And it was always fun to show a bit of our everyday life while offering suggestions to keep your little ones busy with posts such as Save It For A Rainy Day. When I think about my most fun blogging moments, The Big Carnival Bash immediately comes to mind. It was a day filled with great fun, friends, and family and featuring some pretty superb artisans and local businesses. I am ecstatic about the premier of advertising with this launch – featuring even more shops, artisans, and entrepreneurs while helping to promote small business and support handmade.

Thank you for taking this journey with me. It has been an amazing few years, and you have been there to see me through. Without you, this blog would be nowhere.

YOU are SO important.

If you are new to the blog, welcome. I look forward with much excitement to the adventure that is to come and learning more about you, my readers and fellow people of this great earth. Let’s do this together, virtual hand-in-hand, and see where these windy roads lead. It is for certain this life ahead will be a ride. In the words of a new friend and now-advertiser on the new and improved Whimsical Sweet, “Hold on tight!”.

Thank you , friends, thank you.

A very special thank you to our new ‘sweet’ sponsors:

Makin’ The Sauce

Makin’ The Sauce

Hola. It’s been a while…

I’ve been constantly trying to find the balance among caring for our children, homeschooling, working from home, teaching, and cooking meals each day. Every. Single. Day.

It’s no small feat, being a stay-at-home Mom. Throw into the mix the rest of the things I’m doing & I’m just downright crazy.

But back to my point.

Today I made pasta sauce & started thinking as I stirred…

I thought about my heritage. I’m half Italian, half English and All-American. However, I was brought up close to the Italian side, therefore gained the important knowledge of making sauce.

If you’re Italian-American, you know what I’m talking about. Everyone knows how to make sauce if you are Italian or married to one. Everyone appreciates good sauce, but not all sauce is good.

As I was stirring, I thought about what makes sauce good. If you asked my grandmother when she was alive, she would’ve probably said fresh ingredients and love. She would do everything by hand – every piece of garlic and onion cut, almost shaved in her fingers, every pinch of parsley smooshed in between her perfect little hands. She would roll her meatballs with those same hands and every single meatball was perfection. She didn’t overcook anything and the meal was never undercooked. She also used lard to fry her meatballs (gasp!).

Her sauce was immaculate.

My mother made a just-as-delicious sauce, albeit a different sauce all together. She is the English side of our heritage, but knew that marrying an Italian meant learning how to make sauce. So she referred to Sophia Loren’s recipe. My mother makes a meat-based sauce & adds to it a little more than Ms. Loren’s sauce, which is simple.

Then there’s me. My husband happens to L-O-V-E sauce. If it were up to him, we would eat it every day in various ways. On pasta, on pizza, on chicken, eggplant…whatever. All three of our kids love it, too. I’d like to think my sauce is the perfect mix of my Mom’s & my grandmother’s sauces. I always make enough to have some leftover & another container to freeze. Don’t you?

So what is it that makes good sauce? In my opinion, it is what tastes the closest to what La Mama used to make. The aromas and flavors arouse nostalgia among our taste buds, and it tastes good to us. I’ve learned to enjoy other sauces, too, but to this day, nothing compares to my mother’s nor my grandmother’s sauce. You just can’t get the best sauce in a jar. Every Italian knows that. And we all have our one, maybe two, places to dine out to get decent sauce. They are few and far between. Every Italian knows that, too.

Who makes the best sauce in your life? Can you relate?!

EIEIO Photography

EIEIO Photography

Meet Chelse Thompson of EIEIO Photography.

She’s a wife and a mother to two lovely children. She’s eclectic and fun & it shows in her unique work! It’s difficult to choose what I like most about Chelse as she has so many amazing qualities about her photography and her persona. She gets the job done efficiently but makes you feel at home during a shoot. Her creative ideas will surprise you. She is a passionate photographer who will not disappoint. Session after session, whether I know her subjects or not, emotions are touched by the beautiful essence she displays in her photos.

EIEIO Photography often surrounds the subject in nature so the raw beauty is able to shine brightly. Chelse has an eye for surroundings, for lighting and creativity. From brides to babies, she works angles that will transform your moments into outstanding photographs. If you can’t imagine it, Chelse can. Her work is inventive and it’s simply lovely to watch unfold. Chelse’s studio adapts to the needs of the session as well – she’s not afraid to utilize an adorable prop and has the ultimate collection of backdrops to choose from!

Another special attribute about EIEIO Photography is their blog. Chelse and her team like to feature local businesses to give them the spotlight for a bit. It’s nice to have a photographer become an integral part of her community. I was fortunate enough to have Chelse photograph some of sweet whimsy designs’ playable art. Chelse featured a wonderful blog about myself and my growing business. I continue to receive compliments on my business cards and shop listing photos due to EIEIO’s stunning work. She made my peg dolls look like celebrities!

Hi There!

Hi There!

I’m sorry.

I’m sorry I haven’t been around in a while … in a long while.

I’ve been that crazy-kind-of-busy we get, you know, when it feels like there’s a million and one things to do but only twenty-four hours in a day to do them? And we need sleep, and we need to eat, and brush our teeth, and …

I want you to know I didn’t forget about us. I also want you to know there is so much to tell you!

About sweet whimsy designs.

About homeschool. (Why does autocorrect not think “homeschool” is a word? Then again, autocorrect does not think “autocorrect” is a word. Get it together, autocorrect!)

About my friends who have good things to share.

About life.

I’ll be back soon. I promise.

This Is Homeschool: 01.16.14

This Is Homeschool: 01.16.14

We’ve been spending lots of days in our jammies (you’ve got that right – full days in pajamas – simply because we can). Between multiple illnesses among us and the freezing cold temps outside, why bother getting dressed?! Today, being a ‘recovery’ day, we decided to stay in our pj’s & do things like play cards, dye noodle necklaces (post coming soon), read, & do workbooks and a few other projects.

We love playing cards for so many reasons. As homeschoolers, it teaches us various concepts such as numbers, taking turns, strategy, planning ahead…and as a family, it brings us together for some time, usually a long time, and teaches patience as well as how to win and how to lose.

Crazy 8’s (pictured) is a great game for little ones. Also, Go Fish, Old Maid, & Speed are fun, age-appropriate games to play with preschoolers & kindergartners. The kids love playing card games & learn in the process: a win-win! Who knew a little play could lead to such enrichment?!

What are some of your favorite family-friendly card games? Do share, please!
