Fab Five Fridays: Kid-Friendly iPad/iPhone Apps

6 May

Happy Fab Five Friday!  Today I’d like to touch on some great apps offered for your iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch.  In our household, we have both an iPad & iPod Touch.  My awesome husband actually scored an iPad from a competition he won at work as well as the iPod Touch as a work bonus one year.  What a great educational tool it is!  We usually keep an eye out for free apps but occasionally splurge and make a purchase.  Here is our current top five:

1.  Monkey Preschool Lunchbox

A two year-old fave.  Monkey Preschool Lunchbox has decent graphics that are fun and colorful.  Concepts covered include the alphabet, counting, opposites, colors, matching, even puzzles!  They are always updating and adding more learning excitement.  Cool bonus:  kids get to pick a virtual sticker every few rounds which gives them a nice pat on the back if they’re playing independently.  Admittedly at our house, we like monkeys so this purchase was a no-brainer.

2.  I Hear Ewe

Here we have a nice app for younger toddlers getting started on the iPad.  It’s amusing to teach sounds to kids.  They vary from animals to vehicles.  Perhaps you can’t tell, but even though my children adore this one, I think it’s a little overplayed, therefore I may be a little bored annoyed with it?  That’s a good thing, though, isn’t it?!

3.  Super Why!

We LOVE this show and LOVE this app!  It seems to cover a wide range of ages because there are four different game varieties.  We think it’s the best app for learning to read.  Our daughter is definitely picking up reading skills from our old pal Super Why.  You may learn to love him if you don’t already, he’s a pretty neat character.

4.  Wheels On The Bus

I originally purchased this app for a Music Party (class) that I host once a week with a group of Mom- & Kid-friends.  My kids love it so much they hum the song in their sleep!  This is another great intro-to-Apple-world app.  You slide, poke and tap your way through the popular kid song “The Wheels On The Bus” (duh!).  More great graphics, and there’s a choice of instrument or voice…kids can even record their own!  Creators Duck Duck Moose Design  really did a great job with this app.  They have a lot of others we want to get our hands on but are waiting patiently :) .

5.  Garbage Truck

We may be a little partial (app was created by my cousin’s hubby), but we think this app is great fun!  The designer (Good Glue) has a garbage truck-loving toddler of his own.  He took his graphic art to a kid-friendly level and we think it’s awesome!  Empty garbage cans while you beep horns, jump skateboarders & ring sirens of passer-bys.  Some simple learning for your simple toddler.  And what kid doesn’t love trucks?!

So what do you think?  You must have some faves, too!  Please share ~ we love new, fun & different apps!!

Fab Five Fridays: Children’s Books, Volume Two

29 Apr

Hello blogging world!  It has been a while since my last post, and for legitimate reason.  Our sweet one year-old was hospitalized for a terrible case of roseola.  We are grateful and ever-so-thankful that he is home now, recovering quite well and regaining his immunity.  I am glad to be back to writing.  I will certainly attempt to find the time to jump back in full-throttle!  Thanks for being patient readers!

Today is Friday & you know what that means!  FAB FIVE FRIDAYS!!  I have chosen to continue with “Children’s Books” since we all know there is an extensive & e’er-growing list!  As always, I would LOVE to hear your favorites!  Keep reading :)

1.  “I Love You Through and Through”  by Bernadette Rossetti-Shustak, Illustrated by Caroline Jayne Church

2.  “ABC’s”  by Charlie Harper

3.  “Jamberry”  by Bruce Degen

4.  “Feed Matisse’s Fish” by Julie Appel and Amy Guglielmo

5.  “Millie Moo”  by Camilla Moody

Fab Five Fridays: Music For Little Ears

1 Apr

One thing I took time to do when I was pregnant with my firsborn is begin a music collection.  This collection includes everything from cd’s to music boxes and is always growing.  I have come across some great music!  Music is top priority on my list of “must-haves” with a new baby.  While in utero, my babies listened to quite the variety, pretty much everything!  Now that they’re on the outside, they still listen to a little bit of everything.  Lately we listen to music that is more their pace but always keep the variety.  It’s the spice of life, you know :)

In no particular order because I can’t play favorites, our most listened-to baby cd’s include:

1.  Rockabye Baby  http://rockabyebabymusic.com/

This is a fun series.  You can get your ears on music box renditions of Coldplay, The Beatles, Radiohead and Metallica among many others.  TONS of selection.  I was lucky enough to come across these albums (they are still called albums, aren’t they?!) when I was still carrying our first baby so we’ve collected many by now.

2.  Putumayo  Kids  http://www.putumayo.com

Phenomenal music for the entire family to enjoy.    Putumayo Presents CDs have expanded in the last few years and we couldn’t be happier!  We could listen to our collection all day.  “Sesame Street Playground” gets us going in the morning.  “Picnic Playground” is the perfect complement to our meals.  We have music happy hour in the afternoon when we’re not busy at our Music Party with friends listening to “Rock and Roll Playground”.  Finally, we  often end our day with “Dreamland” (& sometimes “Acoustic Dreamland”).  That’s not to say we don’t listen to ALL of the CDs Putumayo puts out, even the non-Kids CDs are fantastic.  A friendly tip:  check them out at your local library before you purchase to see which ones you like best!

3.  Baby Einstein  http://www.babyeinstein.com/home/

I don’t care what has been said about these cd’s.  I am fully aware that they are not guaranteed to make my baby smarter.  I can’t even believe that the company had a lawsuit filed against them for such reasons.  Agh, America, come on!!  These discs are great for anytime!  We love “Traveling Melodies” for long car rides, or even short ones :)

4.  Curious George Soundtrack, Jack Johnson & Friends  http://www.amazon.com/Longs-Lullabies-Curious-George-Johnson/dp/B000CR7RDE

We jam out to this cd constantly as a family.  One of my favorites-it’s the best cd to accompany you in making dinner!  You don’t have to love the movie or Curious George to love this music.

5.  Baby Loves Jazz  http://babylovesjazz.info/

“Go Baby Go!” is a rockin’ good time!  Admittedly, I didn’t even realize there was a collection of these until doing a search.  I’m excited to find out there are more!!  Singable tunes your children will remember, not to mention yourself and your partner!

I hope you find new titles in some or all of this list.  I love to share music with people!  As always, please feel free to share your personal lists by leaving a comment below.  And you can look forward to more when I follow up with Fab Five Fridays:  Music For Little Ears Volume TWO!

Fab Five Fridays: Children’s Books

11 Mar

One thing a child can never have too many of:  BOOKS.  Children’s books are taking over our space.  They are invading every crevice in the house and we couldn’t be happier!  Today, our list of five children’s books will most likely be different than tomorrow’s list.  Here they are anyway:

1. ”Goodnight Moon”

by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Clement Hurd

My forever favorite.  Now one of Tavia & Marsden’s favorites too :D .  This bedtime classic is a lovely end to a busy day.  We’d like to have a copy for every room.  I’d recommend the sturdy board book as it lasts for years to come.

2. Anything by Eric Carle

by Eric Carle

Colorful illustrations, witty tales.  We are gaining quite the collection thanks to the hand-me-downs of our beloved cousins!  “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, “The Very Quiet Cricket”, “The Very Busy Spider”, “Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?”, “My Very First…” series, et cetera, et cetera.  Usually these books are the perfect length so your little ones will be able to sit through the entire book.

3.  “On The Day You Were Born”

by Debra Frasier

I was given this book as a gift when my first child was born.  Since then I have given it as a gift in return to new mothers, for it is a beautiful story to share with mothers- and fathers-to-be as well as well as after the baby arrives.  Sit and read it together in a quiet, peaceful setting and it may bring tears to your eyes!

4.  Anything by Sandra Boynton

by…well, Sandra Boynton

Our go-to silly stories.  Sandra Boynton writes and illustrates her own zany collection of children’s board books.   Some of our faves include “Blue Hat, Green Hat”, “Moo, Baa, La La La!” and “But Not The Hippopotamus”.  A must-have for any family!

5.  “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom”

by Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault, illustrated by Lois Ehlert

Careful, the words to this book are easily memorized.  You will find yourself chanting “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” all day long!  Trust me, your toddler sponge will LOVE this book.  He/she may even learn the alphabet just a tad faster.

I wish Fridays came every day, not only because, heck - IT’S FRIDAY, but then I could write more Fab Five lists!  I’m just getting warmed up!  Stay tuned for many more children’s book top fives to come. We have a plethora.  What is your Fab Five?  We’d love to hear!

Fab Five Fridays: Toddler Webs, Round One

25 Feb

WELCOME TO FAB FIVE FRIDAYS!
Each Friday from now on I will be providing you with a top 5 list of great things. It will vary from things for babies and family to things for ladies and gents!

One thing you should know about me: I love to make lists. Since I could write, I’ve been listing. I was once known as “The Paper Waster” because of the amount I used making my lists. Something else you should understand: I will always use a Fab 5 list because 5 is a good number. Enough said.

Today: The Interweb. More specifically, educational sites for toddlers. Even more specific, educational sites that our toddler Tavia loves most.

Here is today’s Fab 5:

1. PBSKids.org, also SesameStreet.org

No matter how hard we try, this site takes top bid. Sesame Street is 50% of her entertainment life, and that’s after some effort to get that number down by introducing other characters from other books, shows and internet. She absolutely LOVES PBS Kids!!

2. Kneebouncers.com

Best site for younger toddlers, this is where my daughter learned to use a mouse at the tender age of 1! Unfortunately for us (fortunately for them), they now charge for a subscription ($19.95 for a year, not bad). There are still a few fun pages for free though! There’s also a free trial.

3. TheBigBus.com

Another paid subscription site, but there is a great 30-day free trial. Definitely the best teaching site I’ve found so far. There is an English version as well as a US version.

4. Seussville.com

An obvious favorite. It looks like this site will be good for any age, there is a nice variety of activities and games. While you’re here, be sure to take a look at Seussville University.

5. UpToTen.com

A bit zany, this site is a whole lot of fun! Our faves? Boowa & Kwala. They’re strange as can be but they have some brainy games.

We always sit with our daughter when she is on the computer. She can’t read yet so she needs our help following directions (which she also learns through these programs). Don’t expect them to sit long, they are only toddlers after all! Sometimes we let her navigate through the sites on her own. We feel fortunate to be raising our children in such a tech world. It’s really amazing!

Looking forward to sharing more great sites with you on future Fridays!
