I Love When

I Love When

I love when she falls asleep sucking her thumb then it slips out of her pursed little mouth.

I love when she makes cute little squeaky noises.

I love when she smiles so big and so real at her siblings. And at us.

I love when she has to burp but refuses to break her latch as she nurses, squirming and wriggling her chubby little body against mine.

I love when she reaches to grasp a toy, so determined, so new.

I love when she snuggles. With anyone who wants to snuggle back.

I love when she bats her barely-there lashes at her Daddy, flirting & wrapping him around her barely-there finger.

I love when she smiles in her sleep. When it’s not gas-related.

I love when she coos. And when she tries so hard to communicate with us.

I love when she shivers when we take her out of a bath.

I love when she stares at her hands and feet for what seems like hours at a time.

I love when she wakes hungry, yet only makes a few tiny sounds to let us know she’s ready.

I love when she figures it out.

I love when she tries to sing with me. ABC’s. The Hadley Song. Sing A Song Of Sixpence. Pat-A-Cake.

I love when she waits patiently to be dressed, always with a smile.

I love when she nuzzles her face into mine.

I love when she breathes.

Fifteen weeks old. Almost four months. I love this baby girl.

Fab Five Fridays: Music For Little Ears

Fab Five Fridays: Music For Little Ears

One thing I took time to do when I was pregnant with my firsborn is begin a music collection.  This collection includes everything from cd’s to music boxes and is always growing.  I have come across some great music!  Music is top priority on my list of “must-haves” with a new baby.  While in utero, my babies listened to quite the variety, pretty much everything!  Now that they’re on the outside, they still listen to a little bit of everything.  Lately we listen to music that is more their pace but always keep the variety.  It’s the spice of life, you know 🙂

In no particular order because I can’t play favorites, our most listened-to baby cd’s include:

1.  Rockabye Baby

This is a fun series.  You can get your ears on music box renditions of Coldplay, The Beatles, Radiohead and Metallica among many others.  TONS of selection.  I was lucky enough to come across these albums (they are still called albums, aren’t they?!) when I was still carrying our first baby so we’ve collected many by now.

2.  Putumayo  Kids

Phenomenal music for the entire family to enjoy.    Putumayo Presents CDs have expanded in the last few years and we couldn’t be happier!  We could listen to our collection all day.  “Sesame Street Playground” gets us going in the morning.  “Picnic Playground” is the perfect complement to our meals.  We have music happy hour in the afternoon when we’re not busy at our Music Party with friends listening to “Rock and Roll Playground”.  Finally, we  often end our day with “Dreamland” (& sometimes “Acoustic Dreamland”).  That’s not to say we don’t listen to ALL of the CDs Putumayo puts out, even the non-Kids CDs are fantastic.  A friendly tip:  check them out at your local library before you purchase to see which ones you like best!

3.  Baby Einstein

I don’t care what has been said about these cd’s.  I am fully aware that they are not guaranteed to make my baby smarter.  I can’t even believe that the company had a lawsuit filed against them for such reasons.  Agh, America, come on!!  These discs are great for anytime!  We love “Traveling Melodies” for long car rides, or even short ones 🙂

4.  Curious George Soundtrack, Jack Johnson & Friends

We jam out to this cd constantly as a family.  One of my favorites-it’s the best cd to accompany you in making dinner!  You don’t have to love the movie or Curious George to love this music.

5.  Baby Loves Jazz

“Go Baby Go!” is a rockin’ good time!  Admittedly, I didn’t even realize there was a collection of these until doing a search.  I’m excited to find out there are more!!  Singable tunes your children will remember, not to mention yourself and your partner!

I hope you find new titles in some or all of this list.  I love to share music with people!  As always, please feel free to share your personal lists by leaving a comment below.  And you can look forward to more when I follow up with Fab Five Fridays:  Music For Little Ears Volume TWO!

Fab Five Fridays: Children’s Songs, Volume One

Fab Five Fridays: Children’s Songs, Volume One

Happy Friday!  Time for our Fab Fives.  Today I bring you a list of our favorite tunes to sing on a whim.  No music needed!   As a lifelong musician and teacher, I constantly rely on music to get us through the fun and crazy times.  When in doubt, SING!  Your children will remember the sound of your voice fondly, even if you can’t carry a tune to save your life.

Here is our current fab five list of children’s songs, lyrics included (ok, I realize most of you will probably know most of the lyrics to these very popular children’s songs, but just adding a little whimsy by including the words ;)):

1.  Five Little Monkeys

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed.

One fell off and broke his head.

Mama called the doctor and the doctor said:

“No more monkeys jumping on the bed!”

(repeat with Four, Three, Two and One…)

This happens to be our toddler’s favorite.  Our little big guy has joined in on the fun now that he’s a little older.  Just a great interactive song.

Our favorite version?

Animal Playground

2.  The Alphabet Song

Q R S, T U V,

W X, Y and Z.

Now I know my ABC’s

Next time won’t you sing with me?

Clearly the best because it incorporates learning.  Nothing beats teaching a child through music!  A cool tidbit?  Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Baa, Baa Black Sheep are sung to the same melody as ABC’s!  ….but you probably knew that already.

See below for our faves:

India Arie & Elmo

Super Why

3.  Where Is Thumbkin?

Where is Thumbkin?  Where is Thumbkin?

Here I am!  Here I am!

How are you today, sir?  Very well, I thank you!

Run away!  Run away!

I throw a music party each week for our favorite toddler friends and this interactive song is on their fab five lists.  One special little lady always requests thumbkin at the music class.  How fun!

4.  Sing A Song Of Sixpence

Sing a song of sixpence, pocket full of rye.

Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie.

When the pie was opened, the birds began to sing,

“Wasn’t that a dainty dish to set before the king?!”

The king was in the counting house, counting out his money.

The queen was in the parlour, eating bread and honey.

The maid was in the garden, hanging out the clothes.

When along came a blackbird and snipped off her nose!

(Remember to “snip” those little noses!)

I can still hear my grandmother’s sweet little voice rocking me to sleep on the swingset of my youth.  That’s the reason this song is one of my favorites 🙂  Now it’s one of my children’s favorites too!

5. The Itsy Bitsy Spider

The itsy bitsy spider crawled up the water spout.

Down came the rain and washed the spider out.

Out came the sun and dried up all the rain

And the itsy bitsy spider crawled up the spout again.

Fingerplays are the most fun!  Here’s a silly take:

Mother Goose Club

Please share your favorites by leaving a comment.  We’d love to hear what your faves are and we’re always listening for new music :)!  XOs
